If duck hunting season is about to open, you better make sure you are prepared. Hunting for ducks is a little trickier than going after game like deer or rabbits. You have to expect more than just walking around the woods looking for birds. Of course, every duck hunter has their own little secret weapon. But the real secret is just how well prepared you are for the hunt itself. Now, if you are after ducks, you have to prepare yourself for a number of situations. This means you will have to unconsciously ask yourself a few questions while preparing. Questions like: • Where was I the last time I had a successful duck catch? • Was I in a wet area or did I get those ducks away from water? • Will I need to buy a pair of boots to keep my feet dry if I do get into the water? • What kind of bullets should I buy and do I need to bring a knife? • Will I be out in the woods long or just long enough to catch a couple of ducks? These might sound like strange questions to ask but they are exactly a few of the ones you need to remember to keep the hunt clean and organized. Now, there are a few essential tools that you will need for the hunt. Here are some of the standard tools that you should have already before the duck season starts. 1. A pair of boots or waders – More likely than not, you will catch a duck at a nearby lake. It's just fair to assume that it's a place where they gather and that you might get your feet wet. So have a pair of good rain boots ready to keep your feet dry. If you are planning to get deeper into the water, you might need a pair of waders. These fit over the lower half of your body and keep you from getting wet. 2. Decoys – If you haven't got a few fake ducks lying around the garage, you might want to get some. Decoys are very effective in a duck hunt. Strategically placing them around an area where you think ducks gather will encourage live ducks to come in closer to join them. With a rifle ready, all you really have to do is point and shoot from then on. 3. A bird call – Of course, you can't expect ducks to spot the decoys that you might plant around the place. You need to get their attention. And what better way to get a duck's attention than to “talk” to it? A bird call is an instrument that allows you to mimic duck sounds. There are many types of bird calls so make sure you are using a duck bird call or it won't work at all. The instrument will help you get their attention to the decoys that you have planted around your hunting area and therefore make the hunt easier. |
