Three Effective Deer Hunting Tactics

If you are a deer hunter, then you know that it takes more than just getting up early in the morning to get some good game. What you need is to prepare some kind of hunting strategy, even more so if you are planning a group hunting trip. A strategy is also more than just the equipment that you carry, although you will still need to carry along with your trusty rifle and enough ammo to get your hunting fill.

There are all sorts of tactics that you can plan out and practice in your head. You can head in there and triangulate a great game with your buddies; or use some hi tech gadgets like GPS units to mark places where deer don't hang around in the woods, just so you won't go there a second time. But if you are the type of hunter that wants to get the job done, you can rely on some simple strategies to get that deer practically walking into your range. Here are a few tactics that have been tried and tested, and with a little patience and practice you might end up using them more often than not.

• Baiting – One method that works almost all the time is a trick called baiting. By leaving food for a deer to nibble on, you can sit back and wait in the bushes until a curious doe finds your stash. You can use all sorts of food, but something that deers find really appetizing is sweets. If you have a few cookies or a peanut butter sandwich, try using those items as bait by spreading crumbs over the ground where you suspect they pass by in the woods. This will improve the chance that a deer comes closer to you rather than you walking around looking for it.

• The waiting game – If you have a great hunting spot where you believe the best of bucks hang around throughout the day, what you can do is settle in that spot really early in the morning. Make sure that you pack yourself some food and also make sure that you find a good place to hide in the bushes. By simply waiting, you just might have the luck to shoot yourself a nice buck as it walks into your unsuspecting trap. This tactic is best for patient people and for those who don't mind not walking around during the hunt. It is also best if you either go alone as an experienced hunter or with one other person who is also up to using that tactic.

• Against the wind – If anything, deer do not like traveling around the general area when the wind picks up. This is a tactic that you can only use when you chance upon hunting on a windy day so keep this in mind if you notice the breeze picking up. Usually, bucks will stop and wait for the wind to die down. This is a time that you as a hunter should also stop moving around too much. Find areas where you think bucks will hang around while it is windy and you stand a good chance of bagging yourself good game.
